When most people think of the top smartphone brands currently out on the market, the one that most likely leaps up to the forefront is Apple. After all, the iPhone is arguably the most popular smartphone amongst consumers. But Huawei seems to want to become a strong threat to the California-based tech giant.

As reported by Digital Trends this past Tuesday, Huawei has stolen Apple’s position for being the second-largest smartphone manufacturer. This is due to Huawei selling 49.8 million units during the second quarter of 2018. This means they took 13.3 percent of the smartphone market share, thus beating out Apple’s reported 44.7 million units. The previously mentioned market share is up from the 9.8 percent market share Huawei had during the second quarter of 2017.

While this is good news for Huawei, Apple shouldn’t be too worried about its rather lackluster performance during the second quarter of 2018. With three iPhones reportedly set to release in early September, it’s more than likely that they will bounce back come the third quarter. Still, Apple is clearly facing stiff competition away from typical faces such as Samsung. This means that Apple will be looking to include more new features for their upcoming phones in order to keep old consumers and attract new ones as well.P20-Pro

The top smartphone manufacturer in the second quarter was Samsung, with fourth and fifth going to Xiaomi and Oppo respectively. Granted, Samsung reportedly had some minor sales decline but managed to pull a 19.3 percent of market share. Xiaomi garnered a significant amount of growth, selling almost 33 million units to generate 8.8 percent of the market share.

With everything considered, it’s clear that Huawei has gained a strong amount of new consumers. While Apple and Samsung are in no way struggling or hurting to turn a profit, they shouldn’t dismiss any other companies as possible threats to the smartphone industry. Huawei has made great strides in gaining more consumers, but Xiaomi and Oppo are clearly gaining a fair amount of new consumers in their own rights. Apple especially will need to take care, given that they’re releasing new smartphones soon. It will be interesting to see if Huawei can continue to grow their market share in the face of three new iPhones coming out soon.
