Race 3 and Salman Khan are that magical commodity known as critic-proof. No amount of negative reviews of the film could stop audiences from thronging the theatres over the Eid weekend, making Race 3 the second highest weekend opener of 2018 at the box office. The film has collected Rs 106.47 crore within three days of the release and is now looking at another open week to strengthen its position.
Starring Jacqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor, Saqib Saleem and Bobby Deol alongside Salman, Race 3 is the third film in the Race franchise and opened to poor reviews on June 15. The film is also Salman’s fourth one to cross the Rs 100-crore-mark in three days, after Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai.
Deepika Padukone’s Padmaavat continues to top the list of highest weekend openers for the year with Rs 114 crore. However, the film that also starred Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, had a five-day weekend as opposed to Race 3’s regular weekend.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the Race 3 box office figures: “And #Race3 scores a CENTURY… Crosses 100 cr… Fourth Salman starrer to collect ₹ 100 cr mark in *3 days* [#BajrangiBhaijaan, #Sultan, #TigerZindaHai]… Fri 29.17 cr, Sat 38.14 cr, Sun 39.16 cr. Total: ₹ 106.47 cr. India biz.”
Race 3 is now the sixth film to cross Rs 100-crore mark in 2018. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, Ajay Devgn’s Raid, Kartik Aaryan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2 and Alia Bhatt’s Raazi were the other movies to cross the coveted mark.
Salman has ruled the box office during Eid for quite some time now. Race 3, which released on around 4200 cinemas in India, has also become Salman’s second highest weekend opener in the last eight years – Sultan earned Rs 180.36 crore in three days of the release.
However, trade experts believe the collections are likely to see a dip from Monday onwards. Bets are still on whether the Salman Khan starrer can cross the Rs 300-crore mark.
